In the wake of COVID 19 Choices will continue to offer substance abuse assessments carefully and on a limited scale. These precautions will be in place at least through the end of December 2020.
First, we require that all clients coming into the building stop at the restrooms just inside the main entrance and wash their hands before entering the Choices suite.
Second, all evaluation appointments will be staggered so as to have only one client in the office at a time.
Third, a six-foot distancing will be in place during the process.
Fourth, Choices will continue to exercise mindful and consistent cleanliness and sanitizing of all areas and items where client contact occurs, with each surface being sanitized again between each client appointment.

**Further, we ask that if you are ill, have a fever (no matter how slight), or have been in contact with someone suspected of having contracted the Covid-19 virus, please do not enter Choices.  Instead, call the office at 913-390-0100 and we will reschedule your appointment.

Thank you for your patience, and hopefully our daily lives will be back to normal soon!  Stay safe!

At Choices, we provide the Johnson, Miami, and Douglas County areas with individualized, timely, and effective substance abuse evaluations.

Generally speaking, when an individual is facing an alcohol or drug related legal issue the presiding Court will frequently request the defendant to demonstrate they are learning and growing through the diversion/probation process.  A structured but very personalized substance abuse assessment (formerly referred to as an ADSAP assessment in DUI and OUI cases) assists in determining what level of substance abuse education or counseling is most appropriate for that individual, in effort to provide the most meaningful experience possible while reducing the likelihood of the defendant returning to the criminal justice system.  The "big picture", however, is to assist the client in determining what positive action can be taken regarding their substance use/abuse choices in order for that individual to develop a healthier, more satisfying lifestyle overall, regardless of their legal status.

A comprehensive substance abuse assessment requires typically approximately ninety minutes, and includes the administration of two standardized testing instruments as well as a sit-down interview with a substance abuse counselor.  At the end of the assessment the client will be informed of the resulting recommendations as well as the motivating factors behind any requests for specific education or counseling, and will be given information regarding how to seek out the referred services.

At Choices, Jeanna Allen (Agency Director), licensed addiction counselor and court-approved evaluator, believes it is crucial to view each client with respect and dignity while working with the individual to develop the tools needed to move forward in their life, free from the negative costs/consequences of substance use, abuse and dependency.

The minimum cost of a DUI assessment provided by a licensed agency/addiction counselor, as set by the State of Kansas July 1st, 2012, is $150.  The cost of a substance abuse assessment for other Municipal Court matters begins at $95 (no checks or American Express please) for first-time, misdemeanor charges, though will depend upon the individual's circumstances overall.  Please contact Choices at (913) 390-0100 for a specific quote.

**As of January 1st, 2017, an individual already on probation, or represented by the Johnson County Public Defender's Office, will be required to provide a $35 deposit to set and hold an assessment appointment date and time.  This will be applied to the cost of the assessment upon arrival, but is not refundable should the individual fail to appear for their appointment.  The deposit can be made with credit or debit over the phone, or may be walked in to the office (to the Olathe location exclusively) during business hours.
